K-12 Students Get an Academic After School Boost from $1.1 Million 21st Century Grant for New Free After School Learning Center in Mesa, Arizona

Mesa Arizona (PRWEB) June 26, 2007 -- Yesterday, the State Board of Education awarded Choice Education and Development Corporation's Sequoia Charter School in Mesa, a 21st Century Community Learning Center grant worth over $1.1 million. Grant funds will be used to establish an After School Learning Center that provides free academic, enrichment and recreational programs to Sequoia's K-12 students and their families.

"I am pleased that Sequoia Charter School is receiving this grant. These programs are designed to help ensure that students have every chance to soar academically with programs available after school hours. Arizona is a leader in school choice and it's important that charter schools have the funds to provide these important services," stated, Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne.

Enrollment starts today, June 26th, on a first come first serve basis. All after school programs will run from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday beginning September 4, 2007.

"Primary and secondary students along with adult family members will have a fun and innovative means of boosting reading, writing and math skills after regular school hours. Tutoring and homework help by highly qualified teachers will complement an array of engaging enrichment and recreational activities including fine and performing arts. The best part, we will be able to provide it all at NO charge!" explained Choice Education Grant Director, Deborah McIff.

According to Mrs. McIff, participants can sign up for:

- Free tutoring with teachers that help complete homework assignments, prepare for tests, and work specifically on concepts covered during the regular school day

- Hands-on enrichment programs that build math, reading, and writing skills through real life activities including: a Debate Club, Family History Exploration, Student Store (Students run a business), Gardening Club (focus on agriculture, science and nutrition), The Reporter Project (students create a school newspaper, yearbook and website), The Comic Book Project (art based literacy program) and a Real Life Math Program

- Art, music and drama programs

- Recreational activities including: martial arts and team sports.

- Adult family members programs such as Effective Parenting, English as a Second Language and Computer Skill classes.
